Winged gems of garnet and ruby
flash before my dedazzled eyes.
Seemingly denizens of vermillion
feathered beings flit from the skies!
Landing and settling, en masse;
commandeering the sweetly
verdured, springtime budded,
ash tree.
Turning it's, at this moment
in time, sparsely leafed crown,
into a veritable bed and breakfast
for cardinals, in the mood,
to be amorous...
Or what appears to be,
something less romantically glamorous...
As the entire flock is of the male persuasion,
judging by their collectively shared,
brilliantly redded plumage...
As fiery in temperament as their coloring-
these little beasts pinch, poke, tweak and twit,
at one another, mercilessly, with sharp, yellow beaks.
Occasionally lifting as a group,
above the ashen bower
they've invaded with their
bizarre to me, behavior.
Then settling back,
to begin anew, once more...
Gifted I am, by Nature,
to witness this dramatic performance;
sitting, quietly in the early morning sunshine,
sipping at my coffee, as I write, at a porch table.
Bedazzled by the display, wondering-
is this some type of pecking
order ritual, to see which
cardinal males will be
allowed to date and mate
with the available females?
I wonder, do they do this,
because there aren't
enough dates,
to go around,
this season?
Or have they re-enacted,
this ritual pecking order,
every spring, and I've
just somehow, missed it?
Never been outside,
at the right time,
to notice?
I feel blessed,
watching the activity,
of the moving splashes,
arcs and ribbons
of cherry feathered
cardinal males;
hopping in and about,
the crown of the
spring leafed ash tree;
as they beat the living
daylights out of one
another in the most
hilarious, tom thumb
sized fashion...
Leaving me numb
with giggles
I couldn't let out,
for fear my natural comedians,
these territorial, warring cardinals;
would fly away and take my light moment,
with them...
