gentle raindrops drip lightly through the leaves along this rocky trail low hanging clouds brush tree tops below Occaneechi Mountain rich mineral deposits historically protected a slow train trudges through the mountain pass whistles Blazing shattering the silence sparkling blue ribbon meanders through the distant trees Eno River flows far down below I follow this trail along the craggy cliff off the beaten path mountain climbing on crutchs alone in nature I do not notice now the pouring rain

call call calling into the distant trees red tail hawk swoops low out side my window mockingbird sings her joyous song reminding me of magnolia in spring blue jay screams his cry of constant conquest somewhere far away As two doves coo softly from either side of the house later as I ride great white goose squawks alarm at my passing bike Redtail sits in regal silence on his highwire

Observe the patterns of Swimming ducks V shaped formations form in two directions A pleasant view out a Dentist's window A small stand of trees before an earthen pond peaceful industrial complex across from the Sports Plex fitness center Now the ducks have gone parting on either side of the window the flight of birds momentarily subsides the forecast is for rain Small town utopia
yard full of cardinals bright red and brown playful squirrels scurry all around two blue jays jostle for position gathering after the storm

Along this trail I found a crystal unlike any other, this must be the right path. Kingfisher spreads his wings and flies landing nearby. Copperhead rest on a rock next to me, this must be like paradise. The water is clear green in blue granite reflecting landscapes deep vivid emerald translucent. Count the fish as they swim by. There are days when no one else is there. Swimming alone in a profound privacy.

It is the right time of day before shadows fad And the sun falls above the trees in western skies shade against the heat Irridescent shimmering green fins flash aquamarine emerald green pristine clean crystal clear water yellow fin brim spreads his colored fan hidden between the rocks awaiting patiently the next bug that drops horse flies are plentiful as friendly schools circle past rocks full of tiny morsels striped bass no longer so large or as plentiful fish hooks litter the shore...

TwiLight Ride
the last glimmer of sunlight has set on the horizon not guiet dark twight on this road at night - be sure to wear a helmet the quarry is hardly an eighth of a mile away been couped up inside all day had hoped to get out earlier i had forget how magical the twilight can be
quarter moon just above the horizon rising above the distant trees below this quarry night time sounds heighten the senses enourmous angular bolders now line the pit they hadn't been there before beautiful in the moonlight's faint glow iridescent stair step creations impossible to resist all alone in nature deep in the forest standing my ground

I'm thoroughly enjoying what you are writing here tl ... deeply meditive. I must confess my ignorance, but this is the first time I had heard of the Occaneechi so I went in search of them Found this interesting link below. Thanks for sharing.. www.occaneechi-saponi.org/

thanks David, yea the pow wow here in Hillsborough is a pretty big deal lots of traditional dance arts and crafts - good sage when you can get it... technically Occaneechi Mountain isn't much of a moutain as far as size goes - we are still pretty much here in the foot hills of NC. though it is said to be a sacred site among the tribe - interesting rock formations and old fire pits and a panther den long since departed...

Just catching up in here, TL...I thought I'd heard the word Occaneechi...And knew it was Native American in origin...Think I last heard the term in geograpy or history class, twenty thousand chapters ago, in the book of my life...LOL... Excellent writing that does Nature great justice as you render Her to cyphers and sentences... So, got more? Nir.

hot off the press ;
you see year after year this war wages on mockingbird swoops squawks and attack it goes on and on relentless and unforgiving till one day the end of summer you see the gleeful glint in your cats eyes feathers strewn all over the yard and on a high wire above a mornful wake at evenings faint glow a low drone of a call against a blood red sky the mate stood stolid for two solid hours saying fair well to love as the sun set behind this thunder head's uncanny resemblance to this bird on a wire
