First day of February,
rain slow falls in big drops
that land in fat plops;
exploding and flattening
upon impact into liquid stars
across the shatterproof
glassine surface of the windshield.
Waiting for the truck engine
to warm up, for a dawn drive
into town, I frown at the continuing,
cold, frozen, or wet weather...
I'm so sick of winter...
Backing from the drive,
I gain the street,
shift it into drive...
And just don't take
my foot off the brake...
Orbitally blessed to view
a touch of spring...
Denizens of robins literally
cover the two acre lawn
of my neighbor...
Even in the cold rain...
Bodies stilled, one leg
slightly lifted, heads ducked
down, held rigid and at a slight angle,
listening, as their bright eyes peer
expectantly at the soggy ground...
Dinner is obviously being served...
Judging by how quickly many of the robins
are going from pose mode, to strike mode,
and drawing back a fat wriggling grub worm...
"Mom? What are you doing? I've got to get to school!
If I don't get there on time, I'll have to sit
on the gym floor! And it's cold!"
I realize, I'm sitting there, foot on the brake,
truck in drive, mouth dropped open in wonder,
eyes widened with the surprise of this touch of spring...
"Look at the robins!" I blather, excitedly,
pointing at our neighbor's yard.
My daughter peers towards where I'm gesturing...
Rolls her eyes exasperatedly, "Mom? Look
at the robins? Have you lost your mind?"
We both laugh at me, as I get it together,
let off the brake, and we head on down
the road, to our routine morning
destination, junior high school...
Three minutes later,
the fat dropped rain,
transforms to sleet
and fat, wet snowflakes,
that melt on contact,
with the truck,
the asphalt
and the countryside;
and disappear
like my visions
on the wing,
of an early spring...

I don't care what the weather is doing...
I don't care if it's the second day of February
and it's barely above freezing outside...
I don't care if that rodent sees his shadow,
or not, today! Old Bill is prophesying
the weather up north for the next six weeks...
Not here...This is the south...I'm telling you...
I saw denizens of robins yesterday...
The first sign of spring soon to come,
in this neck of the woods...
I saw denizend of robins, yesterday!
Drawing up and supping on the flesh
of freshly drawn to the surface,
grub worms...Spring is near...
~*~
Yesterday, today and tomorrow...
The robins message rewarded my faith
in the animals in these parts...
Buttery warm, glorious sunshine!
A touch of spring...Before the next cold snap...

count me sick of winter, dreaming of spring,
and headed to the land of nodzzzzzzzz..........*
