In the gathering gloom of another day settling into dusk mantled with a steadily dropping chill, gently I tucked you into bed...
Each brave, sweet face dear to me...Vulnerable in your fresh audacity to flourish so early... Amazed, you were there at all... Surprised I hadn't managed to kill you, yet...
I arranged the burgundy sheets not the proscribed white to shroud you... As I do not buy white sheets...So, there weren't any on hand to be found...Carefully I floated the sheets above your heads, reverently pushed the edges, about your feet...And anchored them down with river rocks I had on hand, to be certain the arriving and lifting north wind didn't blow the sheets away...
And leave you to freeze to death in the frigid temperatures of the darkness...
A child riding his bicycle down the street stared at me... Squatted by the flower bed tucking and weighing down the last bit of fabric with rocks... And I had to laugh at the open expression on his face...He looked at me, as if I were crazy...Covering dianthus and sedum with sheets from my house...
Good to know, I'm still living up to my hard won reputation...
Better to know, I'll have upside down umbrella shaped blooms of dusty rose, lavender and yellow late this summer and autumn, when the sedum blossoms... Thanks to going about my crazy lady chores.
