It's almost dusk! Oh, how my heart is racing! Will he be here again today? Will he arrive? Oh please God, let him come! I pray nothing has happened to him An accident perhaps
Ah, at last I see a stirring Behind the bushes in the yard. Arrogant and beautiful Regal and sleek He steps into full view. Leading his little harem of four To where the grass is juicy and sweet.
I call him Big Daddy Buck This magnificent creature Who now stands alert, Head back, nose in the air Awaiting the scent of a puma Or a semi perhaps This is, after all, the city He must be on guard for any danger.
They're here most evenings This little band Grazing as though this grass Was planted just for them Were it my yard it would have been Neighbors don't pay much attention anymore They're bored with all of it
But I still stand at my window Every day at the usual hour Just to catch a glimpse And remember when This land was indeed free And when morning comes I hear the rattling of my doorknob And will feed the squirrels Who come for breakfast Only to remember all over again

I'm glad I could give you a smile, Sabrina. It is, indeed, the highlight of my day when this little band of munchers shows up! Anna

Smiling, I am... And know what you mean... Watching nature and kids at play, is my preferred highlight of the day, no matter what else is highlighting my day...LOL... I'm curious though, is the poem, talking about deer, or squirrels? I thought deer, as they eat grass...But, you mentioned squirrels, in your comment in my bird thread...So, I was thinking, is this poem about deer or squirrels? I'm so confused these days...LOL...Running to many errands to think straight... Either way, the poem works and rocks for me...And I'm still enjoying the angle looking out from your window...Grins...Sabrina.

I enjoyed reading your poem very much Anna, but like Sabrina was unsure of the critters involved ... (I'm pretty sure it wasn't about cats I think almost every poem has a cat in it somewhere Whether it was deer or squirrels, thanks for sharing. David

It's about both actually. The deer that come at dusk to "mow" the lawn and the squirrels who literally rattle my doorknob in the morning for their breakfast. And all this in the midst of city traffic! Am I blessed or what?!!!!!LOL The little herd of deer that wander through, however, are what truly make my heart sing!
Sabrina--I only offered to send you squirrels in exchange for birds because I didn't think I could afford the freight for Big Daddy!LMAO

I get a kick out of squirrels, birds, and such...I used to see herds of deer crossing the highways and roadways around San Angelo, when out driving at dusk or nightime, twenty thousand chapters ago in my life, when I lived out there...LOL...That's neat...You just have to stop driving and let them pass...There are also tarantulas so big out there, you can see them crossing the street when you're driving...They look like small, hairy hands...Shivers...Just gave myself the shivers and now, you too, Anna! LOL Sabrina.
