monet was one prolific motherfucker
all those haystacks, all those lilies, all those seascapes, all those twilights on the thames…
as opposed to poor seurat, known for one painting (and a musical) and caillebotte, mainly for two, (so far no musical).
but if you’re only going to be known for a couple of great works, you might as well make them big ones.
and hope they end up centerpieces – logos – of a great collection.

as time goes by
i speak to strangers all the time now, out of the blue, impetuously, hesitating only momentarily, unable to stop myself, on planes, at the ymca pool, in bookstores, crossing campus.
i ask about the food they’re eating, the wine or beer they’ve selected, their destination, the weather, the book they’re reading, life in general.
to the woman who is on the flight back from grading advanced placement essays in Daytona beach, i say, of the power and the glory, “that’s a great book.”
“unh-hunh,” she says, and goes back to her reading.
well, how was i supposed to compete with a great book like that?

sabrina... i didn't thank you (i don't think) for your help in getting locklin's work promoted. he's an amazing and fluid writer...i'm gonna quote something Milner Place wrote about my recent review of locklin's new book...he mentions me in his comments, but i'm not posting it to brag, i'm posting it here to let you know what others beside myself think of locklin... here's what Place wrote:
"I just wish to add my bit to John's very generous review of Gerald Locklin's work. Many may think that it's so easy for those like Gerald, and John Yamrus himself, who write with such an apparently fluent and intimate style. But to do this requires great mastery of their art. It's like the masters in any field, they make it LOOK easy. My admiration for Gerald and John is touched with envy, but it would be absurd for me to try to compete with them on their own ground, even if I fancied myself capable, because they are such masters of that craft. And they are both veterans who have survived a long campaign without flinching, and will both continue to delight, as long as their days (and after)."
Locklin, is the real master, and i consider myself improperly honored to even be mentioned in the same sentence as him. anyway, please support him and his work by ordering one (just one) of his 130 books! isn't that totally amazing? 130 freakin' books published! that just blows me away! i'm just putting the finishing touches on only my 17th...gawd, do i have a lot of work to do! john

You're very welcome, Yams. I got tired of waiting for you to put your favorite poets on this board, so, I did it for you...LOL...Always method to my madness...Plus, you've turned me onto not only Locklin, but some other fine poets, as well...And they became favorites of mine, too.
I would love to buy some new books, or subscribe to any of the magazines you've mentioned worthy of subscribing to. But, at the moment, I'm without the resources to do so...But, that hasn't stopped me, from doing more surfing than I think I've ever done, looking up the works of these poets, you've suggested...
And yes, you have a lot of work to do, to catch up with Locklin...So, get to it! LOL
