I could never figure out what it is people mean when they call a hairstyle, or a T-shirt or a TV show or a movie or whatever 'cheesy.' It seems to me the word is thrown around in a lot of different ways towards anything that's considered artistic in some way. The word seems to imply there's a consensus as to what is acceptable. In my personal experience, some people find a good deal of science fiction 'cheesy.' But I like SF a great deal. Some of the material deemed cheesy I can appreciate, because of the setup for a line or a scene that simply isn't possible in an indirect way.
Some people think Star Trek: TNG was cheesy. Because of the aliens, or what the aliens wore. Sometimes in the early days dialogue was a bit stilted. And right at the beginning, Jonathan Frakes was unused to the concept of "beam me up" and he seems overly stiff before the FX takes over. I've been watching another show supposedly connected to Roddenberry called Andromeda. Viewed a certain way, it *could* be called cheesy. But again, I like it. I like its' potential and they've managed to do interesting things so far. They have good villains.
On the other hand, I would agree that Baywatch is cheesy because it's lame, predictable, similar plots keep getting recycled. Different episode, same old shit. It gets boring and old quickly.
I never liked Beavus and Butthead and I would be totally willing to call it crass, predictable and cheesy.
As a writer, I would like a more solid sense of what the word means. What do you guys think? Is 'cheesy' a synonym for 'bad,' or are they somehow more distinct than that?
