Of sad farewells and fond goodbyes.
In that dungeon of your soul you wait,
To feel at last the knife of fate,
Held tightly in your hand you see,
The blade that’s there to set you free.
That caress you’ve longed for now arrives,
As thoughts of love fight to survive,
Now shadows come to give you night,
As your body still for life does fight.
You think less now of the gnawing pain,
As blood falls free to make a stain,
Upon the carpet by your feet,
That mark of death in life’s defeat.
The weakness comes to lay you down,
In the memories of past you drown,
All those milestones that have passed you by,
All those conventions that you have defied.
With one final thought your mind now dies,
Of sad farewells and fond goodbyes,
To friends you knew so long ago,
But Death finds you lonely in times flow.
Darkness.

Ah, yes, we all die alone, even surrounded by loved ones.
Sweetly nascent poignancy threads its way through this verbal tapestry of a life's memories.
Darkness, you never fail to deliver. As always, well written!
