Since the first dawn I and others like me have existed
We were alpha predators without fear we were legion
The planet was our aerie our Eden before it was yours...
We saw humankind crawl from the primordial ooze
to take its initial wobbly steps onto the shore
of all possibility on paths we'd already laid
Your fragility entranced us. Your high intelligence
amazed us. Your copying our ways in all but one
enamored us hypnotized us. To this day I do not know
Which of us took the first bite out of one of you...
But, it unleashed a fierce lust for the taste
of your rich blood that could only be appeased
By your untimely beautiful death gripped tightly
in our arms as we laid supp to your lifely charms
Some of us with great guilt others without remorse
You were our ambrosia our nectar our favorite milkshake
Your nearness bred a thirst only your death could slake
We were gods compared to you and we were voracious
In the end your species outlived us and had the last laugh
In the Eighties or was it the Seventies-I am so old
I've quite forgotten-many of your race contracted a virus
You called it HIV but we called it the apocalypse
Your kind sickened and suffered slow horrible deaths
We died almost immediately after ingesting your blood
In the beginning our deaths were legion we expired
by the thousands on a daily basis for our addiction
to the garnet wine bubbling through your helpless veins
Until there were but a starving few left of us
To noble or arrogant to return to subsisting
on the blood of numerous animals to scared
To feed on humankind we dried up and disappeared
turned to dust and were blown away with the wind
Once we were your gods and then we were nothing
