A little less than 2000 years ago, a guy had a choice:
To run away to a foreign country and live as a refugee, leaving his troubles behind
OR
To stay put, face the music, and probably get executed by the state for his trouble
The death penalty. A simple idea. Kill the bastards who offer up an alternative.
After all, we've always done it this way, why should we do anything differently?
It's just the way the world is, you can't do squat about it anyway.
Sit down, shut up, and do as you're told.
so we kill the criminals
and keep on killing them
because that's what the law says
Who deserves to die? What crimes are so heinous that there's no other way to respond to the issue at hand?
What is graffiti on the imago dei, that it suddenly becomes okay to kill someone?
There's just one problem: the not guilty who get executed anyway.
How many decent people were misunderstood and had their lives bulldozed by the justice system?
We have this incredible story, a story disputed by certain sectors of our society.
A guy got executed, for whatever reason. Even the oldest accounts can't agree on the 'why.'
He died. He was buried. And then he rose from the grave.
Maybe it was inevitable.
Maybe, execute enough of the not guilty,
Maybe there's blow back.
Maybe resurrection is comeuppance. Maybe resurrection is the consequence of a dumb decision.
Maybe the idea of resurrection is more important than the body itself. Maybe, resurrection means there's hope,
even for people like us, no matter how far gone we think we are, that there is still some kind of hope.
Maybe, just maybe, something surprising will happen for a change......................
