A torrential river flows through the world It's what we call the fourth dimension, time Cavernous spaces, ancient hallowed halls are built on the banks of this river Resonating with the chants, prayers, songs and calls of worshipers Smells and bells, the swaying and genuflecting of bodies And everywhere candles burn before the stone and lime
On the shores of the river sanctuaries are built, stone rafts sent floating down the river of time And there, in the currents of time, the Great War is fought
Insults are hurled, night and day Catapults lob stones, too, one at the other, trying to blast the other side out of the water They started with slings and arrows and worked on making their weapons more complex
Occasionally, with great effort, one of them manages to sink another But time has a way of eroding even the mightiest of stones, some of these rafts eroded down to nothing
And yet they fight
Who are these combatants, what do they want?
One side wants a refuge from fear, to hunker down and lock down, To freeze out anything and everything they don't like or don't understand
The other side wants a theater, a forum, to open its' arms wide, to embrace the All Curious, bold and fearless, they wish to go boldly into the unknown
Who started the war?
The fearful blame the fearless The fearless blame the fearful for being cowards So who knows?
I would rather be on the side of the fearless.....
All I want to know is one thing: which side will win this Great War?

I wonder if your title is the answer - "War Without End." I like the concept of this poem, pitting the two greatest of our emotions, fear and love, against each other. Perhaps we enter this river many times to learn about both. Nice read!

Excellent, well written timely piece. I took the liberty of also posting over at the alternative site of our sister universe, Poets Den. I used both of your monikers. I am glad to know there are fearless people still breathing and walking the planet. Thank you for sharing, David A.! The thumbs up option doesn't do this piece justice! So....here it goes... CLAP!
