Hello stranger.
Hello stranger to this place,
I see you’ve ridden far,
Let me give you ease this frosty night,
Beneath this canopy of stars.
I have some sustenance to lend,
To such a traveller as you,
Enough to fill your belly,
To see the night right through.
My tent will keep you from the cold,
As you feast on what I’ll give,
It’s a blessing to have an honoured guest,
Now I have some memories to relive.
Please sit beside my campfire,
And listen to the tale I’ll tell,
Of darkest deeds of evil beings,
Who had come from that place called hell.
Once I was a mercenary soldier,
And mortal combat was my way,
It was enough to kill, and not be killed,
For I fought for all who’d pay.
My comrades were the dregs of life,
From a world that’s now long gone,
But I often think back to that time,
And for its excitement I still long.
Each battle fought endorsed my view,
That I was a monster in disguise,
How cruel my deeds then perpetrated,
The sin shows clearly in my eyes.
I was in the vigour of my youth,
And had no thought for how I’d fare,
Until I fought that darkest foe,
Whose fate I soon would share.
One year in lands so distant,
As we stood ready for a fight,
Our battle lines prepared to move,
When pure evil came in sight.
Our opponents stood as still as death,
Upon a nearby hill,
All waiting for their orders,
For our blood for them to spill.
A knight of darkness led the fray,
With armour black as night,
His call sounded through misty dawn,
To begin their gruesome fight.
“We fight to the death! Or to our glory!”
As one they gave their battle cry,
Then moved towards us to a man,
To defeat us or to die.
With broadsword held in just one hand,
And strength beyond compare,
The knight of darkness lead the fray,
Against all opposing there.
And in the fore that hellish knight,
Cut down all within his reach,
No form of mercy did he extend,
In the message he would teach.
All the while those evil hordes,
Advanced as my comrades fell,
The blood was flowing freely,
In the heat of conflicts hell.
The battle raged for many hours,
Before the slaughter was complete,
My comrades fought and died right there,
Only I sweet death did cheat.
All alone amongst that darkened throng,
With carnage all around,
I stood ready then to meet my death,
Now with the wind the only sound.
My sword was bloody from the fight,
For many I had slain,
When that knight of darkness came to me,
And said “I know your name.”
“Your soul is mine for ever more,
But your body still will live,”
“For in the last beat of your heart,
My eternal curse I’ll give.”
His sword thrust deep into my chest,
And took my breath away,
But death I found would not be mine,
For soon in darkness I would stay.
The pain was more than I could bare,
As he then withdrew his blade,
Like fire from the depths of hell,
That I thought would never fade.
And as I lay there writhing on the ground,
That knight kneeled by my side,
To drink my blood strait from the wound,
Now from the truth I could not hide.
My adversary was a vampire,
And soon I knew I’d be the same,
For as he drank I felt the curse,
That would make me share his blame.
But that was many years ago,
Now my stories all but told,
I wander now the path night,
With a darkness oh so cold.
How strange the thoughts eternals have,
While waiting for their meal,
Now my hungers sated once again,
As the blood from that body I did steal.
Darkness.
