The past couple of weeks had been very painful for Greg... Getting on the wrong side of a drug dealer was never a wise thing to do, Getting on the wrong side of Carl Grazini was usually fatal.
Grazini was the biggest drug dealer in the city; he had made a lot of money in the past ten years with drug dealing, prostitution, and protection rackets.
A psychotic sadist who took pleasure in inflicting pain on others, or watching as his henchmen torture some poor wretch that Grazini thought had crossed him; He had no scruples at all when it came to who his retribution was aimed at.
Greg had made a meagre living at the store he worked at but he had a wife with expensive tastes and a child to support, so had dealt drugs on the side to supplement his wages.
Now fleeing for his life he was driving through the night in a stolen car, Greg looked at every street corner or car that he met along the way. Grazini had many stooges and police officials in his pocket and the likelihood of being picked up or seen by one of them was good.
As he drove he thought back to two weeks ago when his nightmare started.
“You’re getting the Chance of a lifetime here” the man in the passenger seat of the station wagon said as he handed two kilos of cocaine to Greg, “just make sure you have the money by tomorrow night... Ok?”
It was a sweet deal Greg thought as the station wagon drove off. All he had to do was deliver his package to an acquaintance and get the money for it... His cut was five percent, and if it all worked well he would be getting regular packages to deliver.
Putting the sealed package in a bag he got into his car and drove off, his meeting with the client was not until 10:30 PM so he had a couple of hours to kill, so he decided to get something to eat.
Now parked up in a side street he was eating a burger when he saw the lights of a car as it turned into the side street and pulled up behind him, before he had a chance to start the engine three men with guns jumped out of the car behind and quickly moved to Greg’s car, one of the guns was now pointed at his head, “We want the stuff man,” the man holding the gun said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about” Greg said trying to bluff it out.
“Don’t fuck with me,” the man pointing the gun at Greg said, “we know you’ve got a little package... Now hand it over fucker, or you’re going to regret it,” the man moved the pistol forward sharply prodding Greg in the head with it, “Now!”
There was no choice, Greg reached down to get the bag, “careful,” the man said thinking he may have a weapon of some kind hidden in the bag, “nice and slowly fucker,” the gun did not waver as Greg brought the bag up and the man snatched it from him.
He felt a sharp pain as he was hit hard on the head with the gun... He passed out.
Coming to sometime later he looked at the clock on the dash, “oh shit!” It was 12:30 am... He was in big trouble.
He started the engine of his car and drove back to his apartment as fast as he could; he had to get himself and his family out of the city as quickly as possible. When he got there the door to his apartment was open, the place had been trashed, and his family had presumably been taken.
A note pinned to a door frame said it all... It said simply, ‘you’re next.’
He had no choice but to leave, his family’s fate was sealed and there was nothing he could do about it, he moved around the city over the next two weeks waiting his chance to escape.
But Grazini always knew where he was and liked to make his victims suffer, it suited his cruel nature to leave Greg to worry about the fate of his family.
A package arrived for Greg at the motel he was staying the night at, inside it a blooded human ear and a child’s finger, he burst into tears as he looked at the scraps of flesh and bone that used to be his family, his wife and child were dead, and Grazini knew where he was.
-------------------------------------------------
Two of Grazini’s henchmen had been tailing their target for a few hours, “what’s the time Joe?” the balding man said to his partner, the other man looked at his watch “9:20.”
They were parked up opposite the motel where Greg was staying, “I think it’s time we picked up this fuck” the bald headed man said as they both got out of the car and started to walk towards the motel, “remember, Grazini wants him alive.” they smiled to each other as they walked across the street to the motel.
As they reached the door to Greg’s room they took out their automatic weapons.
Just as they were about to burst through the door a shadow passed by making them stop in their tracks, they both turned round to look.
The knock on the door freaked Greg, after a while he saw the handle turn and the door opened... A man in a dark suit stood in the doorway.
“Hello Mr Sweeney, I Heard about your trouble and I think I may be able to help you, may I come in Greg?”
He looked at the dark suited man “Who are you?” he said, Greg was sweating with fear for he thought that it was another of Grazini’s little games. The man moved into the room, “My name is Marcus, and I represent Justice Inc, a company that specializes in just the problems you are facing at the moment,” Marcus’s voice was quite monotone.
Not caring now Greg burst into tears, the pressure of the past two weeks had almost tipped him into insanity. “So you’re going to get my wife and child back then... Oh, and save my skin as well,” he started to laugh uncontrollably through his tears.
“One thing at a time Greg,” Marcus said without emotion, “We have to know your wishes... Do you think we should dispense justice on those that have committed these crimes?” He stood there waiting for an answer.
“How do you know about all this?” Greg said, “We make it our business to know about these things” Marcus replied impassively, “now please answer the question, Should we dispense justice?” Greg replied, “Yes.”
“Good... We will be in touch with you soon, from now on you are safe, and I’ll leave one of our operatives to protect you until our work is done.” Marcus turned to leave, “wait! I can‘t pay you, why are you doing this?” Greg said, the dark suited man turned back, “We’ll talk about payment later,” he then turned again and walked out of the door.
---------------------------------------------------
Grazini’s well fortified mansion was on the outskirts of the city guarded day and night by his armed henchmen.
At the east perimeter wall two guards walked carrying machine pistol in their hands, a noise to their left made them turn, they died before they fell to the ground, daggers in both their throats.
Dark shapes appeared from the shadows and began winding their way silently toward the mansion killing anyone they found on the way.
Carl lazed in his Jacuzzi with the two whores he had hired for the day, they were going to earn their pay he thought to himself as he sat there, the bubbling water flowing all around him as the two women caressed him.
One of Grazini’s men managed to raise the alarm before he was cut down. Now the sound of automatic weapon fire could be heard as Grazini’s men tried to fend off the attack, but their bullets seemed to just bounce off the dark shapes as they moved forward relentlessly, hacking down any opposition they found.
Hearing the gunfire Grazini got out of the Jacuzzi quickly leaving the two women clinging to each other screaming.
He put on a robe and went out the door into the hallway; two of his henchmen were close at hand. “We’re under attack Boss!” “I can hear that you fool! Who are they? Roberto's men?” “I don’t know Mr Grazini,” there was a sense of panic in the man’s voice.
The gunfire had stopped now, there was a deathly silence as Carl and his two henchmen stood looking at the main doors to the mansion, they watched as the doors began to open and four men in dark cloaks walked in.
Carls two remaining men raised their guns and started to shoot, but their weapons had no effect, the four men moved forward towards them and as Carl backed away he saw one of the bearded intruders draw a sword, killing first one, then the other of Grazini’s men with ease, slicing one of them in two with the force of the thrust.
Grazini started to plead for his life, “If its money you want? Take it... Take it all,” the bearded man in front of him spoke for the first time. “What use is money to us...? No... We are here for the sake of justice that is all.”
“Carl Grazini... You have committed too many crimes against your fellow men to ever know redemption... Hell awaits you sinner.” the man’s voice seemed to carry the weight of centuries upon it.
“Who are you fucks” was Carls only comment, the bearded man looked into Grazini’s face, “your nemesis” was the man’s reply as the sword the man held went through Carl like butter, Carl gurgled for a moment, then died.
The man withdrew his sword wiped the blade on the body of Grazini, then sheathed it as he walked into the room where the two women were sobbing; half dressed they were huddled in the corner of the room.
He moved forward, “be not afraid ladies,” his voice now gentle, “Your sins are forgiven,” he made the sign of the cross then he turned and left to join the others leaving the two women alone as they looked to each other trying to comprehend what had just happened.
----------------------------------------------
Greg had spent a very restless night in the motel, he had not seen anyone since Marcus had left; his thoughts were of his family that he knew he had lost forever.
He laid there in his misery until he heard a voice, “It is done, justice has been dispensed,” it was Marcus. “Now... I give you a gift,” his arm gestured to the door and there were Greg’s wife and child was standing safe and sound.
“But how could you do this? They are dead. “No, not dead Greg as you can see.” Marcus looked back at Greg’s wife and child. “We saved them as we have now saved you.”
Greg rushed towards his family; they hugged each other as the tears of joy flowed.
The monotone voice of Marcus could be heard in the distance, “goodbye... Make sure you live a good life from now on.” He had gone.
----------------------------------------------------------------
“Just like the dark ages,” the knight said as he sat by the open fire warming his old bones, “the dark ages are still here friend” Marcus now wore the same garb as the others of the sacred knights, “there will always be a darkness to conquer... Always.”
“And we will always be there to fight that darkness,” another knight said as he held the pommel of his sword. “Yes... Always” said Marcus.
