As it's now 100 years since the end of the first world war I thought I would share a Photo of one of my ancestors. Great Uncle Fred.
He fought all through the 1914-1918 war. He was in the 9th Lancers, a light cavalry unit. Though a lot of the time he was in the trenches there were times when his unit rode horses on the battle lines. lost a few horses himself. He was wounded twice through the war, and survived to see the end of the war.
He Married and had a family and worked on the railways in the inter war period of the 20's and 30's. I've been told he never spoke about the war, as so many others who had seen the horrors. He had a keen sense of humor. and was a very kind man.
When war broke out again in 1939 he again enlisted. This time in the Royal Engineers as quite a mature man. 44. He was killed at Dunkirk. he was at the railway station when an ammunition train was bombed by the German Luftwaffe.
One of so many who did there bit for King and country.
