Old Gods.
Three ancient beings sit high upon a craggy mountain oblivious to the rain beating down upon them.
They sit in seeming contemplation, occasionally glancing at each other. Then, eventually one of the beings begins to speak.
“I look around this world and find nothing much of worth these days.” His features seem chiselled almost like the mountain around them. “Once, there was a reason... A faith in creation. But now there is nothing.”
One of his companions looked toward him. “Have you lost faith my friend?” Her Beauty still apparent even after so many centuries of pain and suffering. “You must have faith.”
She looks at the smoke rising heavily in the distance. “Yes. I see. But it makes no difference. We cannot influence the outcome. For now it is beyond our power to intervene.”
“If only they listened!” He turns towards her. “And now look what has happened!” Tears form in his eyes and falls down his cheek.
She stands up and moves toward him resting her hand on his arm. “They no longer believe in us in this new reality.” She looks towards the smoke that envelops the sky in the distance. “In time we can rebuild this world and bring back order from the chaos.” She turns to their companion who has been sitting still with his head bowed as if in prayer. “What do you say my friend?”
Their companion looks up. “They are children who do not understand the consequences of their actions. How could we know that those angelic beings we nurtured long ago would become the monsters of today that have little regard for the life around them?”
The craggy faced being walked a few paces towards the seated figure then stopped. “I’ve a mind to go back out into the world once more and remove this plague!”
“No friend.” The seated figure looks into the eyes of his companion. “Look yonder.” He gestures towards the sky. “It is already done, by their own hands.”
“What are they?” The craggy faced being asks.
The female looked to the east watching the streaks move ever onward. “Look! There are more.”
Now the sky was full of lines going in all directions. “Will anything survive?”
The seated figure pondered her question a moment. “Yes, but much will die soon, and also later.”
In the far distance there was an intense flash of light as the first line came down and hit the ground, then after a moment or two a roar. Soon a mushroom cloud billowed upwards, and then another, and another. Soon there were a host of explosions, bright lights, and mushroom clouds all around them. Then a great wind blew almost knocking the two standing off their feet. After a long while the winds died down. The clouds that were above them had gone, and for a moment the sun shone down on them. Then the skies darkened leaving just a red flickering glow from the fires all around reflecting on the clouds. The world around them had now become a burning hell.
The seated figure stood up and surveyed the horizon. “A shame. They had so much promise, but in the end they lost their way.” He spoke with a sense of regret in his voice. “And now, with so much lost it will take time for life to flourish once more.”
“And all those that came before will be forgotten by those that come after.” The female stared into the fiery Hell around them. “But we will remember them. As we remember all that have been.”
“Yes. We will remember. Being the old gods.” Ares looked towards Artemis. “We now wait, for a while. It will be just like a moment to us.”
Hades still surveying the scene wrapped his cape tightly around as if to protect himself from the cold. “A long wait.” He paused a moment. “What type of being do you think will take the succession?” His craggy face having a questioning look.
Ares pointed to one of the many cracks in the mountain. “There! Behold the successors of this world.”
Hades looked towards where Ares was pointing. He saw a small lizard briefly come out of the protection of the crack, the darted back into it.
“Yes. That is a fine stature of a goddess.” Then Ares and Hades made their transformations.
“The other gods will soon follow. And in time our new flock will worship us.”
