1.3 billion years ago....
How the war started they had forgotten in the mists of time. In the distant past their hundreds of years of war had left both civilizations ravaged and starving, to be eventually extinguished leaving just their machines scattered through their star systems. A scant few escaped their age old conflict to drift through the cosmos, travelling through space to find perhaps a new home someday, sending messages once they were far away from the threat of attack from automated machines.
The machines remained... Many vast automated attack ships and formally manned auto battle complexes carried on their former civilizations war even while their masters had turned to dust and were forgotten. Near the end some of these machines were put into hibernation just before the last of those beings had died. To be reactivated at some future time.
But over the eons even these machines built to last began to die, either to destruction from their automated enemy, or just lack of maintenance eventually brought them crashing down till only a very few were left to continue the conflict.
