The door left wide open after exiting the house was the first stark clue this quiet woman had had more than enough of this vicious life She backed out of the driveway head held high tears burning her eyes scalding her cheeks
Jammed the old Impala into drive gunned the big engine hard drove away from the dank darkness pervading her haunted house Neighbors outside watched as the car zoomed by swearing it was clipping at a hundred miles an hour already
More like one hundred and fifty she gained the bottom of the steep incline flew across the empty intersection jumped the sidewalk slammed into a telephone pole And that was all she wrote
Dead as a door nail but free
