So, I had all the earmarks working
all the right posture and structure in place
then, there she was, perfect body, unforgettable face
and like a thirsty dog to water
my eyes betrayed me so strongly
as the dog broke free and drank
you never know what you think you really see
something that is there or not
you make it up you make it right
give it a name and tell yourself you are right
but, she spoke up, and she spoke out
with a steady condemning voice
though not loud, it was a shout
my eyes betrayed me, my thoughts did too
and what was beauty on the outside
was different on the inside, something else instead
but I deserved the rebuke, a rightly earned poke
and when she was finished, I replied with the truth not a joke
and I said it so calmly, it flowed out of me
and the depth of the truth of it, was astounding
I had to share, for it would not let me be
and then in an instant, I will gladly share
these words that I spoke, while she stood right there
"Oh beauty is common, we give it such a price
and they ways that we treat it, there's so much advice
but beauty is common, just that which you see
but truth is uncommon, and it can set you free
you are so desirable it is obvious
and you hear it all the time
you know it for certain
that feeling is sublime
and it does become a burden
and there's so many in line
saying nothing so different
except me now, this one time
the first time you ever see the ocean
and you may be a child, a son or a daughter
or someone or something else, but it just drives you wild
maybe it is the waves that keep coming
or the colors so white and so blue
and it is so immense and intense like this experience with you
but maybe you are willing to walk with your toes in the sand
and feel the waves reach them
and to reach out your hand
maybe feel the champagne of deluge
as each wave rolls out and in
and impulses come over you
and you run charging in
overtaken by salty water
way over your chin
and choking upon it you push deeper in
you just weren't ready, you had not prepared
and you had one experience, and it can get you scared
and yet it makes not much difference
until it is there that you've been
it still looks no different than before you rush in
and you get rightly tossed
and you learn to adapt
still these feelings are wonderful
they can have you fully wrapped
as sometimes what we think of beauty
can just leave us trapped
but my dear, I am now a surfer
on those waves I can ride
and I know the difference
between what is seen and what is inside
so I will take my board elsewhere
and you leave with two feet on the floor aside
and thank you for showing me
what you cannot hide"
Well, if only I had said it
if only I did, but many times
I first see the ocean
and then, still, I am only a kid
all the right posture and structure in place
then, there she was, perfect body, unforgettable face
and like a thirsty dog to water
