***********************************************
A hundred million of us are children who live on the streets. A hundred twenty million live in countries where we were not born. Twenty-three million of us are refugees. Sixteen million of us live in Cairo. Twelve million fish for a living from small boats. Seven and a half million of us are Uygurs. One million of us crew on freezer trawlers. Two thousand of us a day commit suicide.
Annie Dillard (from For the Time Being, 1999)
***********************************************
I wonder how much these figures have changed in the last 8 years or so?

I am reading through some of Annie Dillard's books. She has a wonderful gift of expression and a thoughtful, inquiring mind.
Great reading!

It is not materialism that is the chief curse of the world, as pastors teach, but idealism. Men get into trouble by taking their visions and hallucinations too seriously. ~~Henry Louis Mencken

This is an old story.
Shekinah wanders this world, a weary outcast worn and bent with travel. In loneliness she is burdened with heavy sorrow. She walks and weeps and finds no comfort.
Yet in her gray eyes, bright with tears, hope still shines that one day her solitary exile will end. O happy day, when Bride and Groom are reunited!
Shekinah and Elohim, his being and her presence, lover and beloved, will one day be made one. Heaven and Earth will be restored and made whole, and all eyes will weep with joy at the redemption.

Yes, I got quite a chuckle out of that, myself. Not sure what the context was, but by itself it is hilarious.
