Lord bless the druggie,
The pusher and the pimp
The dosser and the cannibal
Of God’s creations
Most horrible.
The lurkers
In the subways, and ghoulish
Shadows of overpasses.
Please bless The occupants of concrete
Isolation chambers,
Forgotten by their Mothers
And unforgiven by their Fathers
Lord bless the secret drinker;
Who fractured in his misery;
Broken by his faithlessness,
Rolls across the floor of life,
Tongue outstretched, with mind
And stomach wretched in
Pain, and sweat, and divine
Forgetfulness.
Show that Salvation is at hand;
That the glory Train is waiting
in the station of his heart.
Let him live long Enough
to taste the sweetest
Joy, to rise again like lazarus,
To fill his throat with songs
And cold sweet water.
